Weihnachten naht - Christmas is approaching
Ein Blick von der Dachterrasse der VR-Bank auf den Würzburger Marktplatz mit Weihnachtsmarkt. Im Bild links die gotische Marienkapelle, die anstelle der 1349 nach einem Judenpogrom zerstörten Synagoge zur Sühne errichtet wurde. In dieser Mordnacht am 21. April wurde das gesamte Judenviertel mit Synagoge zerstört und die Juden größtenteils ermordet.

In the picture on the left the Gothic Marienkapelle, which was built instead of the synagogue destroyed in 1349 after a Jewish pogrom. In this night of murder on 21 April the entire Jewish quarter with the synagogue was destroyed and most of the Jews were murdered.

... dafür wäre er doch zu eckig ;) Nein, darunter verbirgt sich ein 15 m hoher Obelisk, der zu einem Brunnen gehört (Obeliskbrunnen oder Marktbrunnen), der im Jahr 1802 errichtet wurde.
Der klassizistische Brunnen markiert das Zentrum des Unteren Marktplatzes. Möglich ist, dass der Obelisk an den Beginn der Landesvermessung erinnert, für deren Triangulationsverfahren markante Hilfspunkte nötig waren.

... so ist es! In den folgenden Jahrhunderten nach diesem großen Pogrom (das erste gleichen Ausmaßes fand schon 1147 statt) wurde die Ansiedlung von Juden in Würzburg mal geduldet, mal wurden sie vertrieben; zeitweiligen Schutz erhielten nur die sehr wenigen Familien, die über ein bestimmtes Vermögen verfügten und den Herrschenden meist als ‚Hoffaktoren’ und Finanziers zu Diensten waren. Nach den schlimmen Judenpogromen auch in Würzburg im November 1938 deportierten und ermordeten dann die Nazischergen während des Weltkrieges 1941,42 und 43 alle Würzburger Juden. Das ist unsere Geschichte!

What a nice bird's-eye view! The Gothic Marienkapelle is so impressive and huge. It commands all the attention in this image, though I also love looking around to see the different details. Thanks for the information, what a terrible tragedy which was played out there so long ago. :(

In this wonderfully bright night vision for an imminent Christmas I deeply appreciated your memory of a Jewish ghetto destroyed in years so distant but always present.
For some, Christmas is perhaps only a Christian festivity but for me it should be a way to make us learn to bring together all peoples, different cultures and religions in a sign of peace and hopeful community
Too difficult maybe, an illusion .... but .. GrAzie , cammino ! You get me to think about this !
