Lake Powell - 1996

Lake Powell - 1996
The chimneys in the background belong to the "Navajo Generating Station" (Salt River Project-Navajo Generating Station). It was a 2.25-gigawatt, coal-fired power plant located on the Navajo Nation, near Page, Arizona. On November 18, 2019, the plant ceased commercial generation. Full decommissioning of the site is projected to take approximately three years. On December 18, 2020, the three remaining smokestacks were demolished. Now, 35 years later, the water level is much deeper!

You can see 6 chimneys here, which is very strange, because there were only three since the plant was built. 1996 must be the year, when 3 new chimneys has been built and the old ones must have been demolished soon after this photo was taken. They were 236 m tall.

You can find a very intersting (but sad) story here about the power plants and queezing out the life of Colorado river: medium.com/matter/end-of-the-miracle-machines-690a5f00df1d

A vast and beautiful landscape which will look much better when those chimneys are gone!

Of course on the one hand, and environmental positive, but on the other hand it was a landmark in its time ;-) Many thanks, Keith!

Unfortunately it was a smoking "Greek sanctuarity", but closed and demolished in the meantime. Thanks Judite!

Good riddance! And a great shot. Thanks also for the link. It was a pretty good summary of the issues, altho one thing they didn't mention is that--adding insult to injury--the Navajo didn't even get a very good deal for their coal!
