ODE TO LONELINESS

ODE TO LONELINESS
I like not to be alone
thinks the fisherman at dawn
amid the hustle
and bustle of work
and the trawler swinging
on high seas

but he remains alone

I like not to be alone
thinks the fishwife early in the morning
at the fish shop on my street in Lisboa
when she takes the fish out of the plastic boxes covered by ice
and places it on the stand lined up
with price signboards
as if they were in a war cemetery

but she remains alone

and now I make an ALMOST SURREAL QUOTE here
it looks good in a lengthy poem like this

...a long grouper stretched out on the stand
bites on a mackerel that slipped from the fish shoal next to it
and got arrested in his half-open mouth between very sharp teeth
skewered in his vitreous eyes...

...this reminds me of when I was a kid
in Viana do Castelo
where alive lampreys were sold suspended from the fingers of street vendors for 2$50 each
after leaving the river they lasted a long time dying and crying like hungry babies
and I was full of pity behind the kitchen door
until they stopped bleeding
and remained very still
sliced in garlic sauce
waiting for the cabidela rice
and my remorse passed away when I ate them from the clay dish with Ponte da Barca red wine...

end of the ALMOST SURREAL QUOTE

I like not to be alone
thinks the fishwife's daughter in the early afternoon
while she prepares the fish we bought for dinner
and talks happily to us

but she remains alone

I like not to be alone
you and I think at the end of the afternoon
when we wait for the grouper steaks I'm going to grill
over low heat and with lots of lemon

but we remain alone
dear
because what waits for us
is the loneliness we are
forever

amor
porque o que nos espera
é a solidão de que somos
para sempre
