"TOBACCO SHOP"

"TOBACCO SHOP"
"I'm nothing.
I'll never be nothing.
I can't want to be nothing.
This apart, I've in me
all dreams of the world."

by Álvaro de Campos / Frenando PESSOA (excerpt), probably the best Portuguese poem ever

(photo taken at 88ª Feira do LIvro de Lisboa, 2018)

Steve Bucknell, Ulrich John, Annemarie and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

You should read this magnificent poem by Fernando PESSOA. Nothing to do with tobacco addiction.

When I first read the beginning of Pessoa’s Tobacconist’s I quickly wrote this on the facing page:

I am not a poet,
Never shall be a poet,
Cannot will myself to be a poet.
This apart, I often dream that I am a great poet.
