Die Ankunft des Elefanten in Brixen ist geschichtlich bezeugt. Das Tier war ein Geschenk des portugiesischen Königs Johann III. an seinen Neffen Erzherzog Maximilian von Österreich. Die Schiffsreise von Lissabon nach Genua war für den Elefanten sicher kein Vergnügen, erst recht nicht der lange Fussmarsch über die Alpen. Die Menschen am Wegesrand erlebten das Tier als Sensation: In Trient applaudierten ihm Bischöfe und Kardinäle, in Bozen wurde er im Triumph empfangen. Auch im kleinen Brixen standen Städter Spalier, als der Elefant kurz vor Weihnachten 1551 mit großem Gefolge einmarschierte.
Für den Gasthof, der bald seinen Namen tragen sollte, wurde die Ankunft zum Glücksfall. Der Wirt Andrä Posch beherbergte den Elefanten 14 Tage lang, bis er am 2. Januar 1552 nach Norden weiterzog. Im Mai 1552 erreichte der Dickhäuter die Hauptstadt Wien.
Der langen Reise folgte ein kurzer Aufenthalt: Das Tier starb im Dezember 1553 in der Menagerie in Kaiserebersdorf, wo es an falscher Fütterung und wohl auch an Heimweh zugrunde ging.
Nach dem Tod des Elefanten war seine Reise noch nicht beendet. Sein Vorderfuß wurde abgenommen und die Knochen zu einem kunstvollen Stuhl umgestaltet, der bis heute in Stift Kremsmünster aufbewahrt wird. Den Rest verehrte Maximilian dem bayerischen Herzog Albrecht, der den ausgestopften Dickhäuter in seine Schausammlung aufnahm. Als Teil des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums in München überdauerte er noch 400 Jahre.
