I see lots of bee flies of different sizes on my walks in the mountains of Central Spain. The amazing thing to me is that the smaller the bee fly, the louder it sounds!!!
Love this shot!

Thanks Andy, I wonder if the smaller ones have faster wing-beats and so possibly a louder sound?

You could be right, Adrian. I enjoy seeing them on my walks and I hear them long before I see them of course!

I keep hoping that I will see a different species in the garden but so far they are limited to Bombylius major. I do find that even this one species can vary greatly in size though, some are tiny whilst others relatively large as bee flies go.

Maybe you're right and I'm seeing the same species just at different stages of development, but I don't really know. I do know however that there are more than one species.
