An interesting vision of this object is like eyes. Usually, eyes are paired objects, and in order to associate with one eye, you need to have a special look at things. You have it!

I re-watched the Ruth Rendell 1990s TV adaptation of 'Going Wrong' on ITV+ a couple of months ago. I remember buying the book in the 1990s. The other one I seem to remember is 'A Fatal Inversion' written under her Barbara Vine pen-name, and also made in to a TV series, I think.
