POSTCARD
Date: Not evident. Not Posted.
Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified
Notation: This building is the flour mill of the Lake of the Woods Milling Company Limited in Keewatin, Ontario. The mill was in operation from 1888 - 1967, marketing its product as Five Roses Flour. These tracks are running East towards Kenora. The Town of Keewatin lies across a small bay/channel just to the south (right) of the mill. The small building seen in the distance on the right side of the photo is the Keewatin railway station.
KN0377 KENORA - OLYMPIA GOLD MINE

|
POSTCARD
Date: Not evident. Not Posted.
Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified
Notation: This picturesque photo image is of the Olmypia Gold Mine on Helldiver Bay, Shoal Lake, Ontario. The site is near the cabin where we spend our summers and I have visited it many times. Virtually all of the buildings are long gone, the forests have reclaimed the open spaces, and, apart from several open shafts, there is little evidence that anything of any significance ever took place there.

KN0375 KENORA - [CIRCUS ANIMALS - ELEPHANTS & CAME…

|
|
POSTCARD
Date: Not evident. Not Posted.
Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified
Notation: Elephants and camels strolling on the road beside the park attached to the C.P.R. Station in Kenora, (Station is to the right of this picture.) It seems quite likely that the circus arrived by train, as a journey by road from the nearest sizeable town (Winnipeg) would have been over 100 miles of primitive roads through inhospitable terrain.
Note on reverse reads; "This is some of the circus that was here. I finished them up, and painted them myself too." Follow this link to see one of the photos that the photographer added (red) paint to: KN0372 KENORA - [CIRCUS ANIMALS - ELEPHANTS & CAMELS]

KN0373 KENORA - [RESIDENTIAL STREET]

|
POSTCARD
Date: Not evident. Not Posted.
Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified,
Notation: The photographer is not identified, but the Valentine number 600,770 appears on the right bottom corner. This scene was used for later colour printed postcards by Valentine. Wintorbos has posted this same image without the Valentine numbering and the caption on that card resembles the printing used by photographer W. Woodhouse.

POSTCARD
Date: Not evident. Not Posted.
Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified
Notation: Elephants & Camels in the park outside Kenora's C.P.R. station. You gotta love it! It would appear that the circus came to town by train - given Kenora's remote location, it makes sense.
Of particular interest in the image: I was a little despondent when I saw the red marks on this photo - thinking it had been spoiled somewhat by a chance encounter with red ink. On closer examination, I discovered that the red tinting had been added to the flower beds by the photographer.
KN0371 KENORA - MOTOR BOAT AT KENORA [SWEETHEART]
|
|
|
POSTCARD
Date: Not evident. Not Posted.
Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified
Notation:
I am pleased to say that I learned more about the Sweetheart from Mr. Jim Fields; "The SWEETHEART was owned by the Pulford family that had the Pulford island near the back channel. My grandfather R J Speers bought the island in 1945. The boat was scrapped. The Sweetheart was used to transport the Duke of Conought in 1913 when he gave the Royal designation to the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club. I think Mr Pulford was Commodore of the club that year."
In the book "Lake of the Woods through the Lens of Carl G. Linde" I saw a picture of a July 1914 Regatta in Kenora that featured the Sweetheart as one of "300 elaborately decorated boats... to mark... the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught."

|
|
POSTCARD
Date: Posted May 30, 1907 from Winnipeg to Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified
Notation: This card has an undivided back. There is no reference to Winnipeg Beach on the card itself - leaving the supposed location of the image suspect. The handwriting on the front reads:
"A 'orseless Carriage
Out for a drive on the boulevard
May 24-'07 Winnipeg Beach

I am not sure what is going on i this scene - all these shovel-toting men positioned on the incline, but there is a derailed locomotive evident on that side of the tracks.

POSTCARD
Date: Not Posted, but handwritten note dates it as June 11, 1911.
Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified
Notation: I was quite taken with this handmade card. Crafted on a birchbark card, the picture appears to have been hand-painted on the card. The edges have been ruffled somehow, edged in black, and highlighted in gold.
Here is an image of the reverse side. (Click on it to enlarge.)
