MN1121 DAUPHIN - PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 1907

14 Jan 2017 1 170
POSTCARD Date: Not Posted. Handwritten note indicated July 1907. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: This card is printed on an undivided Cyko back - supporting the early date of this card. The fist time that I saw this image, I was immediately drawn to it. For a couple of years, however, I was unable to confirm its location. Many hours of online research were fruitless. The distinctive steeple was the key, but I just couldn't find a matching image anywhere. Oddly, just weeks ago I was looking at a card that has been in my collection for many years - a "children's parade" in 1907 Dauphin. For the fist time, I recognized a steeple in the background that was a perfect match for this one - confirming that this church, indeed, was located in Dauphin.

MN1120 MIAMI - [PORTRAIT OF DAPPER MAN IN WICKER C…

14 Jan 2017 2 180
POSTCARD Date: Posted May 3, 1909. From Mary Godkin to Mrs. Jas A. Webster in Witmer, Ontario Publisher / Photographer: Mrs. T. Godkin. Notation: Women photographers were rare in 1909. I was surprised to see this portrait postcard decoratively embossed with "Mrs. T. Godkin, Maimi, Manitoba". Surprisingly, the note on the reverse is signed "Mary Godkin". Mrs. Godkin writes; "This is Harry Godkin. He was married the 8 of March." Harry Godkin aka Thomas Henry Godkin, it turns out, is the son of Mary and her husband Thomas. Harry, born in 1883, married to Laura Etta Duval and living in Cutknife, SK. The couple had a daughter in 1910 - Mary Anita Ferne Godkin. So far, I haven't been able to find any historical reference to Mrs. Godkin in Miami, but I have found several references to her in Morden, Manitoba in Census reports from 1901, 1906, & 1916. It appears that her maiden name was Mary Ann Ady. I could find no reference to her having a photography business or living in Miami, but Miami is only 30 km from Morden and her husband Thomas was apparently buried there. On Ancestry.com, I discovered a photo of Thomas & Mary, below. I also discovered this photo of Harry - apparently taken in the same studio as my picture:

WP2167 WPG - BLOOD INDIANS WINNIPEG STAMPEDE 1913

11 Jan 2017 1 194
POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial. Notation: Interestingly, most if not all of the First Nations folks who were part of the show at the Winnipeg Stampede were from Alberta. The organiser, Guy Weadick recruited them because they had done such a great job at his stampede in Calgary in 1912.

30 Dec 2016 1 2 157
POSTCARD Date: April 1916. Not Posted. PMB072 VICTORIA BEACH - A SQUAW WITH TWO PAPOOSE

30 Dec 2016 178
PHOTOGRAPH 6 X 10 cm Date: As written on border: July 19, 1923 Publisher / Photographer: This was from a set of photos taken by a traveller who came up to Manitoba through the central U.S., headed east to the Maritimes, and continued south through the eastern U.S. Notation: This appears to be a storefront at Victoria Beach. The man on the steps appears in many of the other photos and must be the travelling companion of the photographer. An aboriginal woman and two of her children are on the platform behind him. See close-up below:

MN1119 SELKIRK - H.B. CO'S DOGS - SELKIRK, MAN [LO…

30 Dec 2016 218
POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Publisher / Photographer: R. H. Gilhuly, Selkirk, Man. Notation: This is one of three scenes of dogsleds on the grounds of Lower Fort Garry that I have seen on postcards. One is a more panoramic view. The other two (including this one) seem to be have been from photos taken only right after each other. All of the dogs and people seem to be in both images, having shifted positions only slightly. Similar version (subjects shifted): More panoramic image of fort buildings (and likely different subjects):

MN1118 SOMERSET - NORTHERN CROWN BANK

30 Dec 2016 170
POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: This unmailed postcard is addressed to Mrs. Pauline Clukir in Pascoag, Rhode Island. Postcard shows the Northern Crown Bank next to the Pioneer Departmental Store with J. A. Decosse, Proprietor on the awning - apparently, Joseph Antheme Decosse. The note on the reverse identifies the location as Somerset, Manitoba. There is a man on top of the steps of the bank. The message on the card reads: "This is our Somerset Bank don't it look fine. Just going in for one of my Checks. The man that took that Just done it on Purpose So as to Catch me on the steps By By Uncle Henry." (A remote possibility that the writer of this card and the man on the steps might be Henry Thomson Champion who was a Director of the Northern Crown Bank.

BR215 BRANDON - [CROWD AT FAIR]

19 Dec 2016 1 180
POSTCARD Date: Posted August 1, 1905. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: The card was posted from Brandon, but there is nothing obvious in the image or in any text that confirms that this image was taken there. This was some kind of public event. Hard to see in the image, there is the side of a large tent to the left side of the image. (just behind the two girls in the foreground, a large wooden stake is holding down a guy-wire.) The seller of this postcard indicated that first nations people were pictured. I am not so certain. The women in the back centre, I think, could also be wearing clothing from eastern Europe.

MN1117 ROLAND - COMMERCIAL HOUSE

10 Dec 2016 1 198

MN1116 DARLINGFORD - [RAILWAY AVENUE STORES AND DE…

10 Dec 2016 2 260
POSTCARD Date: Posted August 9, 1907 from Darlingford, Man. to Mrs. D. L. Fraser in Old Orchard, Maine. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: I just love the "feel" of this photograph.Nothing pretentious about the scene. As far as I can tell, it shows the railway depot/station on the north side of the tracks (right side of the image) and commercial buildings on the north side of Railway Avenue (left side of the image). The building on the extreme left is The Empire (Hotel?) The third building to the right of it, and above the white awning, there is a sign that appears to read "Wilsons Drug Store". Sadly, the signs on the other buildings are not quite legible. The note on the reverse reads; "Received your letter to-day, also one from Don. Am glad you are feeling better & that Bressie is well. Remind her she promised to write me a letter while I was away. Ella hasn't got back from (??) yet... What do you think of this for a town the cross is over Colemans store. Clarence came down Saturday and stayed till Wed. to see us. with love from Maud."

MN1115 BOISSEVAIN - BRASS BAND

03 Dec 2016 1 164
POSTCARD Date: Posted August 11, 1907. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: I had to acquire it... who can pass on a small town bandstand?!? This postcard had faded considerably. Like others in this condition, I had to give the image a post-scanning boost. Through the bandstand, the sign for the Queen’s Hotel can be seen. Fieldstone construction, I understand that it was built in 1894-95 and burned down sometime after 1960.
