07 Jun 2017 3 3 223
POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified. Notation: Painted on his cart is “W.H. Morgan Grocer 140 Higgins Ave”. He was living with his wife Sophy (Sophia, Sophie) and 1 year old son Rhys. in the 1906 Census, the couple had added a son, Howell, born on 1904. PMB073 1958 CHRISTMAS GREETINGS - THE LYALLS

07 Jun 2017 1 2 213
PHOTOGRAPH 12 X 9.5 cm Date: Christmas, 1958. Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial. Notation: Until recently, I have has no luck in finding a photograph of Maurice Lyall, one of Winnipeg's most prolific pre-WWI postcard publishers. Recently, through ancestry.ca, I connected with Jessie Greenwood, Maurice's great niece. She was very helpful in providing me with information on he and his family. She also generously sent me this original "Do it Yourself" Christmas card - made by Maurice Lyall himself.

MN1141 DAUPHIN - BURROWS AVE. LOOKING SOUTH

07 Jun 2017 3 188
POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified. Notation: Interestingly enough, there is no current Burrows Avenue in Dauphin. I assume that it has been renamed, but no one I have contacted in Dauphin (City Offices, Land Titles, etc.knows anything about it. Burrows avenue is also the address for the boot makers card that I recently acquired: MN1137 DAUPHIN - TOSELAND & SON - BOOTMAKERS I found this text from the Dauphin Herald September 19, 1946: "The Dauphin Herald & Press Is Published Every Thursday by The Dauphin Herald Co. Ltd. at its office, Burrows Avenue, Dauphin, Manitoba". It was obviously one of the busy commercial streets - and nobody in Dauphin knows about it?

MN1140 ST. LAZARE - EGLISE ET PRESBYTERE [CHURCH A…

07 Jun 2017 3 207
POSTCARD Date: Unposted, but February 13 is written on the front and the note on the back is dated February 16, 1914. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified. Notation: This postcard is quite unusual as it is a coloured real photo one. To the best of my knowledge this could only have been done by tinting the photo by hand. I have read that a stone church and rectory was constructed in 1898, replacing the original log church that had been in use since 1880. But I was unable to find images online to confirm that the structures shown on the postcard were, in fact, these buildings. I contacted the RM of Ellice-Archie and received a very thorough reply from Connie Tanguay. She sent me photographic images from the Ellice Centennial book which confirmed that the postcard is of these historic St. Lazare buildings. She also sent an article from the May 22, 1023 issue of La Liberte which reported that the church was destroyed by fire on Sunday, May 18, 1923. Apparently the church was located in the north-west part of St. Lazare and its foundations are still visible next to the old graveyard. This is a rough translation of the (French) message on the reverse: "My dear Justin, forgive me for my long silence, I will give you the reasons for it. To remember St Lazare more often, I send you one of the most beautiful memories that one can have - the church and presbytery and the hills behind. The month of February was very cold and last week 45 to 48 degrees below zero. Since yesterday -10 below zero. We find it good. We have temperatures but not earthquakes. I hope that we are very good. This card saved you a good memory of your friend."

23 May 2017 1 239
POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial. Notation: Apart from the great headgear, it was the background of this image that was of particular interest to me. On the right is the seldom-seen backside of the old Law Court building on Kennedy St. The building on the left is a wing of the old Vaughan Street Gaol. The tall wooden fence behind the trees is part of the wall that enclosed the exercise area attached to the jail. The top of the fence has some kind of fixture that would prevent inmates from climbing out.

04 May 2017 2 404
POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Publisher / Photographer: Warwick Bro's & Rutter #448 Notation: This is an accurate representation of Devil's Gap. However, Warwick Bro's also published #449 in their series - an extremely exaggerated misrepresentation of the place - albeit much more in keeping with the site's rather colourful name.

That's our way home to the left and around that bank. the river is at the bottom passes just behind the bandstand, around the town 200 yards below the cross again..."
