Es ist das älteste christliche Gästehaus in der Heiligen Stadt und liegt direkt an der Via Dolorosa. Es wurde 1863 als kirchliche Stiftung eröffnet. Das im Stil des Historismus erbaute repräsentative Gebäude unterstand von Anfang an dem Erzbischof von Wien.
