Yggdrasil

Solitary tree at Borg, Vestvågøya. At this site the largest ever found Viking building was excavated in 1983, a 83m long chieftain's long-house which was built around 500 A.D. and abandoned ca. 950 A.D. It is thought the chieftain and his family sailed to Iceland when king Olav Tryggvason forcibly christianised the Lofot Islands. Near the excavation site a reconstructed long-house now houses the Lofotr Viking museum.

In Borg auf der Lofoteninsel Vestvågøya wurde 1983 das größte je gefundene Wikingerhaus ausgegraben, ein 83m langes Häuptlings- Langhaus, das von ca. 500 n.Chr. stammt und um 950 n.Chr. wieder aufgegeben wurde. Man nimmt an, dass der Häuptling und seine Sippe nach Island auswanderten, als König Olav Tryggvason die Lofoten gewaltsam christianisierte.
Neben der Ausgrabungsstätte wurde das Langhaus nachgebaut, das jetzt das Lofotr Viking Museum beherbergt.

...hab grad gedacht, das ist "mein" Baum. Schöne tonale Abstufungen auch hier.

Auf Amrum gibt es auch so ein nachgebautes (allerdings steinzeitliches) Langhaus mitten in den Dünen. Muss mal schauen, ob ich ein Foto habe..

Danke vielmals, Antje! Zu dem Wikingerhaus musste es Yggdrasil sein. Die Wikinger selber waren allerdings alle im Museums-Langhaus beschäftigt;-) Es ist touristisch aufgemacht, aber trotzdem sehr gut.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! The weather was rather gloomy with drizzle so it was convenient that most of the "action" was inside the reconstructed long- house. I was a bit sceptic because they use guides in Viking dress but it was really interesting.

Großen Dank, Percy! Das Museum ist sehr interessant, man bekommt Audioguides und kann so lange rumtrödeln, wie man möchte. Dann gibt's auch noch richtige Führungen mit verkleideten Wikingern und Essen in der großen Halle. Da war ich skeptisch, weil es mir sehr touristisch vorkam, aber es war viel besser, als ich befürchtet hatte!

I'm not sure I agree. Sometimes there's no harm in anchoring a shot like this in modern times. After all everyone looking at this fine scene will know a camera has been behind it and I'm pretty confident in asserting that (Leonado's camera obscura excepted), cameras weren't generally available to the populace when this longhouse was built!

I think there were enough trees for timber at the time but they cut too many of them down so the islands were pretty barren after a while. The same thing happened in Iceland, which still hasn't recovered.
