Long Cavaleur

Long Cavaleur
This less visited stretch of Guernsey's southwest coast has no sandy coves but lots of interesting cliffs.
Long Cavaleur (see inset photo) with its rock arch is slowly being eroded away. Both Long Cavaleur and Les Tielles in the background consist of reddish Icart gneiss, one of the oldest rocks in Britain, and are crossed by grey dolerite dykes.

This takes me back to 1973 - the last time I was here as an undergraduate student on our third-year university geology field trip! The geology of Guernsey is really interesting. It's time I went back for another look!

Thanks a lot! I must admit I looked up the geological info only after the visit- I'm just an interested lay person;-) I feel I must go again, buy the booklet by La Société Guernesiaise and have a better look.
