Lihou causeway (PiP)

Lihou causeway (PiP)
Lihou Island lies off Guernsey's west coast. It is connected to L'Erée headland (seen here with Fort Saumarez) via a causeway accessible at (very) low tide. It is essential to observe the causeway opening times to avoid getting stranded on Lihou, because once the water gets ankle high it is too dangerous to cross.

Inset photos:
View from L'Èrée towards Lihou
Life in the tide zone -orange: breadcrumb sponge (halichondria panicea) / dark red jelly blobs: beadlet anemone (actinia equina). The mauve stuff is an encrusting seaweed of the lithophyllum or lithothamnium species.

Herzlichen Dank, Ulrich!

Merci, Nadine! There is quite a lot marine life - after all this area is more often under water than not with up to 15m difference between high and low tide....

Besten Dank, Peter!

Thanks a lot, David! The crossing is fun though the causeway is not everywhere as good as here.

The causeway has a line that rememinds me of Sagres. Good picture.

Thank you, Jose! It is built that it isn't immediately washed away but they still need to do a lot of repairs;-)

fantastic path, those stones that makes the road looks so old !!!! Just made for a victorian carriage !
Gudrun has replied to Nylonbleu
Merci, Isabelle! Actually this is comparatively new though the stones themselves are older. The water washes away bits of the causeway all the time so they have to keep repairing it.
Your victorian carriage would get stuck further on, there are some sandy bits where the current is strongest and they are always wet....

Vielen Dank, Lothar!

Like the hike to Dungeness Spit lighthouse off the Strait of Juan de Fuca--better check the tide tables first! ;)

Gudrun has replied to slgwv
Absolutely, with spring tides up to 15m high this is a must;-) Sometimes the causeway is closed for days on end...
