Ghost Train

Ghost Train
Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D on a Nikon D700. Now eclipsed by the Fuji X-E1 and the 35mm f/1.4 Fuji lens - smaller, lighter, easier.

Redolent, for me, of the song Slow Train, by Flanders and Swann.

There is a lot of pain in this song, even if the names of stations you miss personally are not included. Before the railway network was savaged, it worked for people. People who wore a boiler suit to work or carried a wicker basket to the local market. People who knew you, even if they did not know your name. So obviously it had to go. The rulers can't allow communities and contentment to get in the way of progress. That act of vandalism was the blueprint for more social brutality. It goes on still.

Such an eloquent, stately, moving song of loss. I don’t think there’s anything like it in the rest of their work…but, perhaps there’s some hidden pain under the relentless jollity which was their style.
