The 5 princesses

The 5 princesses
Once upon a time in Japan...

Seems that back before the Edo era there were 2 strong families, the Hattfields and the McCoys, in Nippon (OK, OK, I don't remember their names). Well one or the other got on the bad side of the emperor (the other family/clan ratted them out!) and five princesses, sisters, ended up exiled from the capitol and settled on this shore of the Seto inland sea. The oldest princess, one day, found a red crab, red being their family's color. White being the color of the other family, she ordered her sisters to find a white crab and smash it. They searched and searched and not finding any white one, the youngest sister tried painting one white. The ruse didn't work and her older sister killed her. Subsequently the four remaining sisters were killed or committed suicide by jumping in to the Seto inland sea.

Now on shore sits the five different colored rocks, all that remains of the five princesses, hence the shore of the five colors.

Japanese watercolor on occidental paper.
