Less usual view of the Alston Arches.

.
Posted to Sunday Challenge [11th June 2023 : Bridges] - mainly as a physical bridge, but in this view it is more of an infinity tunnel !

Thank you - these arches are fascinating, but getting the light right takes luck and planning.

This viaduct used to carry a railway (from Alston to Haltwhistle) over the River South Tyne. These "internal" arches increase the strength of the structure, whilst reducing the amount of stone / weight required to build it.

This is a view of the whole thing ...

(if you search "Alston Arches" you should find some more images)

The railway was opened in the 1850's and axed by Beeching (eventually closed in 1976) and now the narrow gauge "South Tynedale Railway" uses the trackbed. Currently, the first three miles Alston to Lintley have been re-opened, with further expansion planned.
E2A - as of June 2018, STR re-opened as far as Slaggyford [5 miles from Alston].
