Vitruvian Man

A few years after he and Leronadro became friends, Bramante en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donato_Bramante painted a fresco that featured two ancient philosophers, Heraclitus and Democritus (fig 37). Democritus, known to be amused by the human condition, is laughing while Heraclitus is crying. Round-faced and balding, the former appears to be self-portrait of Bramante, while the portrait of Hercalitus seems to be based on Leonardo. He has a profusion of flowing, tightly curled hair, rose-coloured tunic, prominent eyebrows and chin, and a manuscript book we can imagine how Leonardo, still clean-shaven, looked in his prime. ~ Page 142
