Buses such as this were the only public transportation in rural and mofussil areas (in the district/country of my origin). Capacity was around 40 passengers. Any person with just a stop signal on road side was picked up, be it just a couple of miles or the whole distance where the buses use ply. The ticket fare being any where a few cents to may be a half a dollar -- as per the prevailing exchange rates. The covered around 25 miles per hour. Sometime after Independence of India Tata Mercedes Benz deeplythinking.wordpress.com/2011/06/15/tata-mercedes-benz made its debut and within 15 years these disappeared. Few were seen plying upto early 1980s

Another long term friendship tata has was with the remarkable industry pioneer in Mangalore, Vaman Kudva (1899-1967) who is today hardly remembered outside Mangalore. Kudva’s Canara Public Conveyance Company (CPC) once owned the largest fleet of buses and trucks in southern India. He was the first Indian industrialist to master the continuous casting steel technology, a process essential for making leaf springs for automobiles. Every car manufactured in India had Kudva’s Canara Springs as original equipment. ~ Page 112
