This ability decreases with age; by the middle forties they eye can only accommodate itself to see clearly about ten inches removed from eye. Eine Brille (auch bezeichnet als Augenglas oder Augengläser) ist eine seit dem 13. Jahrhundert vor den Augen getragene Konstruktion, die in den überwiegenden Fällen als optisches Hilfsmittel Fehlsichtigkeiten und Stellungsfehler der Augen korrigiert und als solche Korrektionsbrille oder Korrekturbrille genannt wird. Laut Chrysippos soll Archimedes († 212 v. Chr.) die Brechungsgesetze von Linsen untersucht und einen am Kopf befestigten Kristall zur Sehkorrektur getragen haben. Seine Entdeckung fand in der Antike aber offenbar keine praktische Nachahmung.
Die als Sehhilfe für beide Augen auf die Nase gesetzte Lesebrille wurde Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts in Norditalien, möglicherweise in der Toskana, erfunden. Wichtige Vorarbeiten leistete Roger Bacon, der in seinem 1267 erschienenen Werk Opus maius wesentliche Erkenntnisse zur physikalischen Optik lieferte und glaubte, Kugelsegmente aus „Krystall“ oder Glas seien vorzügliche Hilfsmittel für Alters- oder Fehlsichtige.
Die älteste Darstellung einer Brille findet sich auf den Fresken des italienischen Malers Tommaso da Modena im Kapitelsaal von San Niccolo in Treviso. Sie sind um das Jahr 1352 entstanden.
