In 1854, moreover, a government postal service was established, bringing to India the same ‘penny post’ introduced in Britain some fifteen years earlier. Mail could now be sent, the cost to the sender, any distance within the country, at the same low cost. This facility served not only individuals, including people in remote villages (who often depended on literate letter writers and readers clustered outside office building), but was indispensable to the communications and fundraising of the voluntary societies, organizations, and publishers emerging in this period. Some indication of the variety of mail delivery services utilized even in twentieth century India can be seen in the set of stamps, issued on occasion of the coronation of the king-Emperor George VI. . . . In the 1830s an exchange of letters between Britain and india could take two years; by 1970, with the opening of the Suez Canal a letter could reach Bombay in only one month. ~ page 99
