World Photography Day, Great Central Railway 19th August 2023

World Photography Day, Great Central Railway 19th August 2023
Taken on World Photography Day.

Al is preparing to set off from Quorn station on the Great Central Railway behind the controls of Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48305.

This photo of a steam loco cab highlights many aspects on a personal level for me. I volunteer as a fireman at the heritage railway so it is the scene of many pleasurable hours spent on the footplate. Al began work on British Railways in the 1950s so he is a direct link back to the real days of steam & it's a privilege to work with him today. 48305 itself was withdrawn from service and sold for scrap in 1968 so the fact that the engine is still running 55 years later is witness to the many hours put into restoring it from scrapyard condition by many other enthusiasts.

We are recreating scenes from the past for the benefit of those that can remember them as well as for the many more that don't.

Eric Desjours, appo-fam, Team, Bergfex and 26 other people have particularly liked this photo

A great capture here Peter. You have capture the 8F and Al in an extraordinary way. The monochrome is perfect. A fitting contribution to WPD2023. Well done.

Wonderful photo of this old locomotive and of Al. The effect of the bw is perfect, capturing the "old-time" feel.

What a superb reconstruction of the "days of steam", it's like a picture of past times. With your description I understand the scene, congratulation for what you do, Pete.

Wow. Al looks like a bit of the machinery - in a good way! The harsh contrast used here adds to the hard work feel of running such an engine. Love all the details and a great composition.
Wonderful.

I was privledged to ride on a steam train on the Isle of Wight last summer. We could have used you that day as there was a railside fire that the engineer had to pour water on. Quite the cloud of smoke and excitement. Happily it only took about 1/2 hour for it to be put out, but a pail of water didn't seem like the best tool for the job!

How long have you been photographing trains?

Thanks Laura.

We run with an extra van carrying water tanks and a pump when there's a fire risk. Definitely more efficient that a bucket!

I took my first - very poor - photo in 1968 but I started volunteering at the GCR in 2001 since when my output has probably got out of hand...

Ah, as to getting out of hand, you just need a group like I have for nature photos. I call mine 'naturey crap, crappy nature' - because I often think, how can I enjoy another pretty picture of nature, then I take one myself and add it to the group. haha. (the group accepts all types of nature photos, the name is a joke which some people can't understand, ah well.)

You could call yours 'train trash' - hahaha

Hi Pete
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
Wonderful and interesting composition, especially in B&W .
Now, that poses a couple of questions for me.. If he started in the 1950's then he must be in his mid 80's. I thought drivers had to retire at 70..
I looked at my pictures of the 8F leaving Quorn that day, and this is not the guy looking back along the platform, so if you were fireman, that must have been you!
Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!

Hi Peter,
Thanks very much. You're right, he is 81 but as long as a driver can pass the annual medical, the bi-annual driving exam and the bi-annual rules & regs exam there is no reason for them to retire.
It depends when you took your photos; there is a morning crew and an afternoon crew - we were on the afternoon shift.
Cheers
