Sandtoft Lincolnshire 29th August 2021
The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft, near Doncaster, is the world's largest collection of preserved trolleybuses. It's actually located on what was RAF Sandtoft, an abandoned Second World War airfield.

Sunday was the 60th anniversary of the formation of the British Trolleybus Society and the museum ran services with some of the society's fleet. In the afternoon this line-up was arranged for photographers.

Right to left are BTS vehicles: South Shields 204, Huddersfield 631, Reading 113, Manchester 1344 and privately owned Nottingham 506. Full details & histories of the fleet can be found at www.britishtrolley.org.uk/bts-fleet-list .

Splendid sight !

I wish I could say that I remember trolleybuses actually "in service" but I am not sure that I do.
I certainly recall my father and my in-laws talking - positively - about them.

I remember the Doncaster trollies from when I was a kid. They run really quietly and smoothly and given their environmental advantages it is a great shame they were replaced in British towns and cities by diesel buses. Back when they were scrapped the only consideration was the cost of replacing the life-expired equipment. Buses were modern compared to the old-fashioned looking trolleybuses and trams. They did things differently in Europe.

The only trolley-buses I can remember were ones I saw from the train on the outskirts of Reading about 60 years ago. Good to see these distinctive vehicles being preserved.

I agree Phil. The British Trolleybus Society was actually formed in 1961 to preserve a Reading trolleybus.
