De buurt - The neighbourhood
The Sunday Challenge: De buurt

The Sunday Challenge: The neighbourhood
View of the artificial island of Wittenburg across the Kattenburgervaart. Left the view from around 1950, right the current view. A lot has changed in the past 72 years, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. The Protestant Oosterkerk (left) has been restored, the Protestant congregation moved and merged with other congregations many years ago. The church is now used as a community centre and there are also church services from time to time. The catholic Annakerk (left-hand photo, centre) has been demolished. The building of the brewery De Parel (right) has been restaurated to apartments.
All the other buildings, both mostly houses of questionable quality and industrial buildings, made way for social housing in the 1980s, much of which has since been sold in the last 20 or so years. How will it look like in another 75 years?
