The Sunday Challenge: Blauw en geel

The Sunday Challenge: Blue and yellow
It is springtime. Yellow daffodils are in full bloom and blue grape hyacinth will follow soon. Cities such as Kharkiv, Mariupol and Kyiv are being blown to bits. Hundreds of thousands of people have been massacred and hundreds of thousands will be massacred. They are victims of a delusion. Of 'living space' and racial superiority. The year is nineteen hundred and forty-three.

It is springtime again. Yellow daffodils are in full bloom and blue grape hyacinth will follow soon. Cities such as Kharkiv, Mariupol and Kyiv are being blown to bits. Thousands of people have been killed. Millions of people are fleeing. They are victims of a delusion. Of imperialism and patriotism. The year is two thousand and twenty-two.

I am sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

Part of the ending speech by a Jewish barber who is mistaken for Tomanian dictator Adenoid Hynkel, both played by Charlie Chaplin in the film ‘The Great Dictator’ (1940).
