Godber Mine

Godber Mine
A small active turquoise (!) mine in the Simpson Park Mountains, Lander County, Nevada. Central Nevada turquoise is well-regarded among aficionados, and this is one of the sources. The operation even sells turquoise directly from their web site! Telephoto view; location is of the mine itself rather than the photo point.

Smiley Derleth, Pam J, William Sutherland and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

Fell in love with one stone.. but can't afford to spend out on it.

Yeah, one of the attractive things about turquoise is the individuality of the stones, and even the deposits! Someone acquainted with turquoise has little difficulty recognizing the source of a particular specimen.

I didn't think commercial turquoise operations existed!

They tend to be small, either independent or contractors to copper mines. Turquoise deposits are always small and localized, because the mineral is an alteration product of primary Cu minerals. So it's not a high-volume operation!

That explains why they seemed to look like lone prospectors.
