You have been warned...

You have been warned...
Warning sign about the possibility of unexploded artillery shells used for avalanche control! At the Five Lakes trailhead, which is near the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski resorts. Sierra Nevada, California.

It makes you think.
Avalanche deaths ... Unknown in any year.
Deaths from exploding shells ... Unknown in any year.
Hmm
I don't know where I'm going with this ... but we live in interesting times!

Every season there are a few avalanche fatalities in the Sierra, mostly in the back country but occasionally from people going into closed areas, as happened at our local resort last December. (The reaction from the skiing community was along the lines of, "That's sad--but geez! It was closed for a reason!) Avalanches within the resort boundaries are exceedingly rare--but that's because they do avalanche control! Most of the ski areas use placed charges rather than artillery, though. On winter mornings we often hear them reverberating across our valley from the ski resort on the northwest side.

The warning reminds me of Do not feed the Alligators - they are wild animals - seen in Florida at some lakes.

It always struck me as ... 'what planet have those people been on? It is Florida -- duh' ..
