Pine drop

Pine drop
Pterospora andromeda. A curious higher plant related to blueberry that is native to the coniferous or mixed forests of North America. It has lost all its chlorophyll and lives in a parasitic relationship with a fungus. Here's the Wikipedia writeup: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_drop. This specimen is in the Sierra Nevada, California, near Ebbets Pass.

Isn't it fascinating how things evolve to meet specialised slots in the environment.

The problem, of course, from the standpoint of geologic time is that becoming too specialized, whatever the short-term benefit, leaves you much more vulnerable to extinction!
