Out for a Ride in 1909

Out for a Ride in 1909
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos theme Park theme of: HORSES, CARRIAGES, OR WAGONS
A friend who grew up with horses remarked, "Did you ever notice how odd horses were in the olden days?"
Well, not being a horse person I had never noticed that, but since she mentioned it I find that it's often true. They look...strange.
This horse seems to have a strong mulish streak, although that's not possible is it?
I think the woman in the carriage is the sister of the person who took all the photos in this album - that I purchased at a huge town-wide sale in Warrensburg, New York.

Nouchetdu38, Smiley Derleth, appo-fam, Alan Mays and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

I'm so happy you save this images. It makes me sad that so many individual lives are lost to time. These everyday moments are the stuff of life.

I'm ready to travel this way, slow and bumpy - how about you?

Last person I know, in my circle anyway, without a cell phone - so yeah, slow and bumpy, that'd suit me!
On the other hand, quite a few of these album photos are dated - and there's one particularly poignant one of the family on a bucolic, summer outing, everyone happy as larks, dated to the very beginnings of WW1.

Such a nice photo of the buggy, occupants, and the horse with leg raised to add to the sense of action. My completely uneducated guess as to why the horses look different is because more were bred for pulling work, with broader necks, and today they are almost exclusively for riding and are sleeker.

Thanks, Rick. I think your guess makes a lot of sense - and failing any of my own ideas, I'll take it!

Quite nice! Like Rick, I noticed that the horse's leg is raised. At first I thought that the photographer had captured the horse in midstride, but there doesn't seem to be any other movement of the horse or carriage. I'm surprised, though, that the horse apparently held its leg still long enough to avoid any blurriness.
