Compliments of Minnie De Lange
Found in the Mary Halkard, Sarah Grimshaw photo album of my husband's great-grandmother. The photo has been trimmed a little and thumbtacked at some point.
She looks like an actress or maybe an opera singer.
There is an A.J. Van Blarcom mentioned in a New Jersey clipping so I'll assume that Dorticus had his studio in that state.
Just found out a little more.
Apparently Clatonia Joaquin Dorticus was a Cuban born inventor who had a patent on (among other things) an improved photo printer. He ran the town photography studio in Newton, New Jersey. He moved to NYC in 1900.
This looks 1880ish to me.
