You know what springs to mind with me on my first sight of this excellent shot? Playing softball in the Sunday leagues that used to play here in the '80s! Seems like yesterday!

Nice picture, but Roy doesn't like square. He's happy with the foreground, though.
The tiny people give a sense of grandeur to the monument and sky.

Whether he likes square or not, this and other pictures of mine are square BY DESIGN, i.e. composed at the time of taking for a square frame.

A camera that offers a choice of aspect ratios facilitates this, the viewfinder image being the chosen shape, in this case square. The new camera has this feature, my primary reason for buying it.

Ditto 3:2, 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.

Roy says, if you must be a square, then at least crop that raggedy bit on the left-hand edge.

And what has happened to that amazing shot of the crazy palace?

I replaced the image yesterday but forgot to reset "Visible by" to "Everyone" afterwards. Sorry. (Perhaps the Palace was built for George III).

The raggedy bits make a nice soft frame for the harshness of the memorial superb composition.

Thanks, John. You have very good judgement.

The pluralisation suggests that he hasn't sussed what Roy meant.
I too love the way the TREES make a nice soft frame for the memorial.

In which case, nor have I; sorry. What did Roy's note say? (I've forgotten).

Roy said, if you must be a square, then at least crop that raggedy bit on the left-hand edge,
and he left one of his helpful cropping suggestions, which in this case was deleted.

It simply involved cropping out that hole in the foliage about halfway up,
with a corresponding slight reduction in the top blue.

Apart from tidying up the edge, this would make the memorial and cloud more of a focal point.

Looking at the picture as a whole, with all its elements, it seems to me that the runners to the left are perfectly placed. To crop the left of the frame would move the runners too far over. My solution to the 'hole' in the left hand tree would be to clone some of the tree into it. This may be a heretical thought, but I'm afraid that it is part of my method. (NB I don't pretend to be a landscape photographer!)

Yes, that would be another way of doing it. But I also think a little needs to come off the top blue (whilst keeping all of the large cloud) to give more prominence to the memorial cross in the heavens.

I don't pretend to be a landscape photographer either, nor any kind of photographer, being just a happy snapper with an automatic. However, Howard and I have had years of friendly argument over cropping and composition. He is a stickler for rules, whilst I am more visceral, relying mostly on serendipity, but both of us are 'heretics' when it comes to cloning.

Thanks for the suggestion. All of my pictures are 'heretical' in some way. I'm a pictorial, not a documentary, photographer and I take advantage of the wonderful opportunity than digital technology gives us, today, to modify reality for artistic effect, which all landscape and other painters did and still do as a matter of course. Why shouldn't photographers do the same?

I could easily move the runners further to the right, but cropping the left of the frame would place the Albert Hall too close to it.

I agree with Howard and I don't put up a lot of my pics because they are "as is" I like them but Roy wouldn't.

Do you know Roy then? I thought it was only me and Howard that he pestered.

He'll find fault with almost every picture you upload, but don't let him deter you.
