Volare


Composed by the artist and lyricist Franco Migliacci the original title is "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" (In the Blue-Painted Blue) the Domenico Modugno single was released as a single in early 1958. "Volare" (Flying) won the San Remo Music Festival while attaining sucess as the Italian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest that year. The tune topped Billboard for weeks, was the number one single for the year and song of the year. It also became the first Grammy winner and the only foreign-language recording to achieve this honour.

Dean Martin's cover featured English lyrics written by Mitchell Parish and is found on the 1958 album "This is Dean Martin". The single peaked at number fifteen.

Bobby Rydell (Ridarelli) released "Volare" in 1960 and during the summer it reached the number four position.

In 1975 Al Martino included the song on the album "To the Door of the Sun". His dance single peaked at thirty-three on Billboard while reaching the top ten in parts of Europe and earning a Canadian gold record.
