The marble hall - Kedleston - Derby.

The marble hall - Kedleston - Derby.
Although called the 'Marble hall' the enormous Corinthian columns that dominate the room, are in fact.. 'Veined alabaster..' from a local quarry. The columns were originally round and smoothed - and were not fluted until a decade after they had been installed - the cost must have been phenomenal - just on the whim of Lord Curzon's preferences .. and required incredible skill by the masons.

The picture in picture.. shows the astounding amount of detail and skilled work to the friezes that goes relatively unseen. Also a close up of the 'fluting' that was later carried out to every column.

Marco F. Delminho, Fred Fouarge, Doug Shepherd and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

Gotcha'.. LutzP'.. this floor began to sink and crack..due to the weight and in 1805.. the 2nd.Lord Scarsdale.. had 12 cast iron columns added to the room underneath here.. to give extra support... but still the floor developed cracks and became uneven...

Thank you Herb... there is a staggering amount of fine detail high up in the friezes that is never noticed from the floor.. as with many other fine buildings of this nature..
