The deserted town of Granadilla

The deserted town of Granadilla
Due to the new reservoirs built in the '50s and '60s, many villages and towns were abandoned and flooded. Granadilla was high above the new reservoir but was effectively surrounded by it and cut off from its farmlands (please have a look at the aerial map to get a gist of this isolation). The population moved to the cities in the main. Some decades later as the place became something of a tourist attraction, a few souls moved in to open a restaurant or two and some tourist shops. I've posted a couple of other shots under my Estramadura album: www.ipernity.com/doc/2247598/album/999420
There is also this wikipedia entry; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granadilla,_Spain
I thought of 'When the levee breaks', a great blues song for this, even if it's not strictly relevant to the photo. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYThZwcDUXk
I selected a 'reaction' Youtube version of this Led Zeppelin classic, just because it was an honest and sincere reaction and it amused me!

Cämmerer zu Nau, sunlight, Erhard Bernstein, Denis Croissant and 57 other people have particularly liked this photo

Hay algunos pueblos abandonados y también aldeas o parroquias que dependían de un pueblo. En ocasiones fueron asentamiento de okupas. Bien capturada la iglesia con las pocas casas en pie y fincas.

This is an absolutely gorgeous picture of this area. There is a programme on the tv here, about Brits who have moved to Spain, Italy and France and bought up these abandoned villages etc. I hope that someone goes to Granadilla and takes it over, renovating those houses and giving life back to that area. At least they won't have to be concerned about water!!!!

Andy Rodker club has replied to Jenny McIntyre club
Yes, true enough about the water, Jenny but all the other facilities and utilities will have to be brought in from somewhere and that ain't cheap!

Gillian,
José Manuel,
Boro,
Pierre,
Jenny,
Sadly there are tens of thousands of abandoned or seriously de-populated villages in Spain and until work can be found in these places that is attractive enough to keep the young people it will be a never-ending story.
Very many thanks!

It would also have been the major town of the regon complete with surroundng solid medieval walls. A look at the map would show that it had a certain eminence at one time!

Very sad for all those who used to live there...........but this sort of thing is a photographers paradise! Very nicely composed Andy...........you've captured the dereliction very nicely but also the trees and other greenery that have survived.

It's good to hear that some people have moved back to service the budding tourist industry and it seems it is used for summer camps as well nowadays. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this town!

I found a very detailed Spanish entry on Wiki (but late last night I couldn't find a way of translating it into English) and the short English one which as you note, I used!
There are seemingly zillions of abandoned or near- abandoned villages (with 2 70 year olds and an 80 year old left, that sort of thing) in Spain - an acknowledged problem but with no clear answer, sadly. But a problem that my girlfriend is expending all her time on addressing - she attends conference after conference on the subject and the rest of her waking hours, it seems, are also based on being in webinars. I hope she does get a position in some foundation, institute or what have you, because she isn't just passionate, she's competant, personable and always good to be around. That she's highly highly intelligent goes without saying (otherwise why would she stay 11 years with me?) ... you don't have to attempt an answer there!

I like this place a lot, Armando! My girlfriend and I circumnavigated the walls on a blisteringly hot day, but the air was clear and fresh so photos were a must. I want to return here one day. My girlfriend is big on the regeneration of rural Spain and sustainability etc etc.

From the map it looked to be a large town Andy and it tis sad that it has been abandoned and left to go to ruin. Good that some people are using tourism to put some life back into the town, but I imagine it would take huge redevelopment plans with an awful lot of money to bring it back to regenerate it. Meanwhile it is perfect for photography, as your super shots illustrate.

HWW and keep well.

Many thanks, Carol and thank you for looking at the map and looking at the album!
Yes, there are a few villages around and about here that are called Such-and-such de Granadilla, indicating that it was the major town of the area - the one with the castle, the main chirch and the market place.

An interesting link Andy and thanks for the explanation that goes with this excellent image. Al though abandoned for different reasons, the lost village of Tyneham comes to mind. It is opened when there is no military activity taking place, but I still haven't been able to visit it.

I'm in two minds as to whether I ever really want to visit Tyneham. I've read so much about it over the years that I feel a bit saturated by the place, even without visiting it!

There is currently a series on TV here in the UK called 'Help! I have bought a village'. It features British couples who have bought abandoned houses and farm buildings, anywhere from Italy to Portugal. In many cases they have gone on to buy up the whole village or hamlet and turn them into holiday accommodation or returned them to local community use. One couple, starting with very little money, have bought so many, that they have set up an estate agent business and have regenerated quite a number of communities. This town would look like a major challenge, even for them.

My girlfriend is fully immersed in projects looking at the viability and means of re-populating abandoned villages here in Spain. At the moment it's all voluntary work but she hopes to gain enough experience to get a full-time and paid position with some foundation or other!
Ironically she's in England as I type this on a two month voluntary working holiday in Salisbury (I forget the name of the foundation / institution) to further both her English and her ambitions. And there was I thinking she was learning well from my very personal tuition!
