Wanblee, South Dakota, 1994

Wanblee, South Dakota, 1994
Birthplace of my mother and her older sister. If you've ever wondered what the middle of nowhere looks like, now you know.

Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation. On the back of this photo my mother wrote:

"Your Great Grandpa (Jacob Woods) was sent [in about 1900] to teach there. Some of the Sioux young men who attended the high school were terrific basketball players (Aaron Two Elk was one of them). Now, there is a very nice modern one, Crazy Horse School.
Wanblee from Hutchings' land. Eagle's Nest Butte in distance."
--------------------
From Wikipedia: "Wanbli is the Lakota word for eagle, and the town was named for its proximity to Wanbli hohpi paha (Eagle Nest Butte)."

Ronald Losure, Peter Van Lom, Diana Australis, Andy Rodker and 12 other people have particularly liked this photo

I've been in this State. I remember 'Rapid City', 'Mount Rushmore', 'Crazy Horse Memorial', the 'Badlands' ...

You saw all of the landmarks! My grandfather's ranch was just south of Badlands National Monument.

Hard to imagine, but I've known people who aren't curious about any of that!

Your Mom had great foresight to include so much detail in her inscription. I think knowing the history keeps anyplace from being nowhere. :)

She has been a great steward of family history and I was always interested!

I think you need to be a Cheyenne, Sioux or Arapaho (etc) to fully appreciated the bounties of the area as it once was!

Yes, but once you spend a little time there, it's possible to fall in love with it. It is even more barren than my region, but the atmosphere is soft and fragrant. It's hard to convey why it appeals to me... it probably has to do with the family association and my many visits throughout my life.

I assume the middle of nowhere nowadays looks similar to then.
Wanblee, a place to "wanna be"? I guess here they cannot profite a lot of the touristic area of Badlands National Park. It's too far away.

No tourists bother people in Wanblee! Thank you, poly!
