Coffee klatch

Coffee klatch
Of course, the proper German term is Kaffeeklatsch, but different sources for etymology were confusing. One said it was altered to the combination English and sort-of German coffee klatch in the 1950s. Others mention late 19th century for the use of Kaffeeklatsch in America, but don't give a date for the transition to coffee klatch. I'm sure precise information exists, but I wasn't fascinated enough to research this further!

Suffice to say that German surnames are probably second only to those from the British Isles in the USA. I suspect we use more German (and Yiddish) phrases as part of American English than those from other immigrant groups. This may give way to Spanish at some future tipping point.

I toss the grounds onto the ground. My garden, that is. Thank you!

I was once told that if you live on an upper floor flat (I do) it is good to dispose of the grounds down the sink (I do) as it helps the flow!

Oh, I've never heard that! I used to do that, but decided to decorate my dirt with the nice, dark grounds. I have no idea if it does any good...

But your plants are probably all coffee addicts and live in a state of perpetual nervous tension!!!!

I did notice that my hosta plants have an extra pep after a few years of being dosed with my coffee grounds. But, who knows...

A coffee filter rose! Interesting to read how German words were adapted.

We use lots of them as English, but sometimes don't use the German spelling. I have no idea how to spell "gesundheit," for instance, but we say it when someone sneezes. Here is a partial list, some I know very well, others I've never heard of: grammar.yourdictionary.com/word-lists/list-of-english-words-of-german-origin.html

You got Gesundheit perfectly right! I had to smile at some of the words in the list, and some I don't know either;-) Never knew that sparerib was supposed to be German, and some are probably Yiddish in origin...

Haha - I didn't notice sparerib! Hmm, that seems suspect. But, yes, we use (or at least understand) dozens of Yiddish words. Those are much more common on the east coast.
