I don't know who Tater is, but he obviously plays baseball.
In back of Kiger Stadium, built 1947 and still in use by the local baseball team, the Gems. (One thing grown around here is a potato variety called Gems. Another is Russet, but that doesn't sound like a baseball team, does it?) To be accurate in the local vernacular, they would use "Spud Welcomes You", not Tater. My father played baseball at this stadium in the late 1940s.

Aaach! I would have gone with Spud! I think "spud" is used more in the NW. But, maybe it's a generational thing. Much of what I am convinced is "Oregon" relates to the culture of loggers and mill workers in the '40s through '60s. Life is complicated, isn't it, Peggy? ; )

Thanks for your research, I like that sort of thing, too.

Also, there is a brand of potato chips/crisps called Tate-os (I think that's how it's spelled). Irish or English, don't remember which.

Oh yes, they're popular here, especially in rural areas or in the South. I've never had any. They're sort of the US equivalent of poutine when smothered in gravy, cheese or whatever you want that will make you look like a whale. There is even a Tater Tot casserole, which I have never seen. Oh, here are some...kind of disgusting to look at...

Love the photo and the comments - as a diabetic I haven't had a spud or a tater in 7-8 years and do you know what - not in the least bit missed!!

I doubt I'd miss them, much, even though I like them in all forms. I rarely eat potatoes. If I were diabetic I would definitely miss sugar...a LOT! Thank you, Andy.
