Wigwam sawdust burner

Wigwam sawdust burner
This is the site of a mill that burned down in 1966. This great old "wigwam" burner was saved. Their use was banned in the 1970s for environmental reasons, but they are still historic symbols of the timber industry in this area. The odd device hanging from the left is the "sawdust cyclone." Sawdust was blown through a pipe connecting the sawmill to the cyclone, then to the burner. This wigwam was probably built in the 1930s.

I have childhood memories of riding by this mill with my dad at night. The roar of that huge burn and the sparks coming out of the top were impressive! I can smell the smoke right now.

The other thing that led to their demise was that sawdust and other byproducts became valuable in their own right!

Absolutely right, slgwv, I didn't think of that! Thanks for adding that important tidbit.

There aren't many of them left, so I hope no more are torn down! The sight, smell and sound of them blasting away at night was really impressive.
