L.R. Knapp

L.R. Knapp
Agricultural machine made by L. R. Knapp and Co Ltd, of Clanfield, Oxfordshire, which was established in 1745. The company made seed and manure drills and manure distributors - I don't know if this is an example of one of those machines. If it is, I can't see how it would function. Perhaps it is incomplete.
These slow-rusting relics are dotted about all over the landscape, but each year become fewer as land is tidied up. When they first fell into disuse the workers who had farmed with them could tell you their function and operation. Now that knowledge has unfortunately all but vanished.
Photographed between Crummock Water and Buttermere in Cumbria. Nikon D50, 35mm f1.8 DX lens.
