Some weeks ago I posted a photo here of one of our Queen Elizabeth post boxes. After that I spotted some earlier ones whilst away from home near Downham. Here is one with the simple GR initials that mark it as a king George V (1910-36) type. The PiP taken the day before is a slightly different type but this time it is a George VI (1936-1952).
Since seeing these I have noticed quite a few GR VI boxes nearer to my home.

Königliche Briefkästen sind für einen Deutschen, besonders wohl für einen Ostdeutschen sehr seltsam anmutende Relikte, die ich eher in einem Museum suchen würde. Aber sie scheinen ihre Aufgabe noch zu erfüllen.

A very practical part of our present as well as the past Jens. These boxes are kept and looked upon with joy as can be seen from the way that they are never vandalised and kept in good order. The post is still collected as per the times stated on each box which vary depending on location. It would be a very sad day indeed if the only place to see our red postboxes where in faceless empty museums.
