Stonyhurst College, Lancashire

Stonyhurst College, Lancashire
A view down one of the two big lakes in front of the college, just west of Clitheroe.
The historic Stonyhurst College, described as one of the largest buildings in the NorthWest. This magnificent 16C manor house, now a famous catholic boarding school has quite a history. We had just walked a previously named three river walk now renamed The Tolkein Trail because J.R.R Tolkein and his family regularly stayed at a guest house in the grounds.
The PiP shows St Peter’s church: an important part of the college.

Stonyhurst College as a school dates back to 1593 when its antecedent, the Jesuit College at St Omer, was founded in Flanders to educate English Catholics. The history of the present school buildings dates as far back as 1200 AD. The gatehouse and towers are dated from 1592 and Oliver Cromwell spent the night in here sleeping on a table. The roll of former Old Stonyhurst reads like a history book of famous people with many famous Jesuits, Beati, martyrs and notables having passed through here.

Thanks Gordon. Yes a fantastic place, especially seen for the first time. We did park at Hurst Green for the start of the walk which was very slippy in the wed mud on the steep incline down to the river. We walked along the main thoroughfare passed the church and along the lakes to the main entrance just at the edge of Hurst Green but in all honesty the way is normally closed except on open days and perhaps in the school holidays in Summer. We were directed by some locals that we followed. We have done the same walk a few times in the past without any trouble but nowadays....

Cheers. Herb

Love your perspective in the main picture Herb. It has a long and interesting history.
I have to admit, I haven't heard of this place. Can the public walk in the grounds?
A very striking PiP also.

All the best, Rosa.

Great that you enjoyed this view Rosa but I think it would have been far better from a higher perspective showing both lakes which lie straddling the main avenue here. A drone view perhaps. Not many people in Gr. Manchester would know this place which is in quite a quite part of Lancashire. Now mapped.
As to whether the public can walk here -I shall copy the answer to Toz: We walked along the main thoroughfare passed the church and along the lakes to the main entrance just at the edge of Hurst Green but in all honesty the way is normally closed except on open days and perhaps in the school holidays in Summer. We were directed by some locals that we followed. We have done the same walk a few times in the past without any trouble but nowadays....

Glad you liked my PiP too.

A superbly composed image Herb. The college building are very impressive, in that lovely sunshine. The surroundings are beautiful........especially the lake, and you've captured some wonderful reflections.

Interesting links as well..........I have to admit I have heard of virtually none of the "old boys", but I'm certainly impressed by the lists of military bravery awards and honours.

Excellent work as always.

Glad you liked the image Keith. The light was quite nice at that moment and I got some reflections at least. Glad you followed the links. Every day we can learn something.
