Our reservoirs today

Our reservoirs today
A glimpse of one of our local reservoirs here, some weeks after possibly the driest year on record. We have had rains over the past weeks bur it might take years to fill this up again. I have never seen the levels as low as this in over fifty years. This is Lowers Swineshaw Reservoir, the accompanying PiP shows Higher Swineshaw reservoir on the same day. The second PiP shows the normal levels taken in 2020.

A stranger told me, as I took this photo, that water was being pumped out of these reservoirs and being sent to southern England as their water shortage is worse than here. We have no official drought here in Lancashire.

Enjoy your day

Tenemos un problema gordísimo con el clima y, por ende, con el agua. Ya hace años se viene diciendo que las próximas guerras se darán por el control del agua. Aquí en España es dramático ver el estado de los embalses.

I agree with all that Marije has said. There is some top secret politicking going on about the discrepancy in water supply between the north and the south here in Spain, but that's been the case since Franco's time. It has got more polemical this year.
Other than that, it's another fine shot, Herb!

This year is one of the few that have made me think about the politics of it all. It was bad here -especially in the south but nothing compared with Spain and Portugal. Where will it end?

Glad you liked the shots. Herb

Un rendu très évocateur..La sécheresse sévit chez depuis quelques années. Mais cette année 2022 est la pire de toutes ce qui influe sur un manque d'eau potable d'où la confection de 03 usines de dessalement d'eau.
Bonne journée dominicale.

Hi Herb, Any idea how the water is transported South ? If it is by tanker fleet has that been mentioned locally? Good to see these Reservoirs I must plan a visit some day, Colin

No idea Colin. We were surprised at that statement as we cannot envisage piping it down from here. This is always a good walk passing three reservoirs and then hitting the high Pennine Way up on the top.

Keep well. Herb

I have never walked Brushes valley and a only ever seen down to Higher Swineshaw after walking to the ridge of Lees Hill from Arnfield. The prospect of the time involved getting to the start on the Stalybridge side is a little off putting with so many other quick start no car options in our valley. thanks Colin

Two fascinating images Herb...............it's only when you see photos like these that we realise just how dangerously low they're getting. I think one of the things we need for the future is a "national grid" for moving the water around to where it's needed. Of course as all the water companies were sold off to the private sector, that's unlikely to happen as all they're interested in is profits. A good start would be to re-nationalise all our utilities and start from scratch.

Despite the lack of water, this is still a really lovely landscape and you've captured it beautifully, as always.

I am with you with the water sharing Keith. We have a lot of reservoirs around here trying to store just some of the mountainous rainfall we usually have. Would be good if we could occasionally swap some of it for your sun and dryness.

Glad you liked the shots. Cheers. Herb

Gotcha' on that Herb'.. moving water around just goes to show what a huge amount of planning went into these systems when first built.. pipework - pumping stations and storage.. I understand that our Derwent / Ladybower dams supply down to Leicester.. going on 60 miles.// Dj.
