Blacksod Harbour scene

Blacksod Harbour scene
A busy view of this working harbour located on the Belmullet Peninsular, Ireland in Blacksod Bay. Of course fences abound in such places. A miserable weather start to our day in this remote spot but it was to improve. In the background stands the old lighthouse. Just to the right, out of shot is still some evidence of the old whaling station (Blacksod Whaling Co ) that used to be located here (see pip). It was active from 1900 till 1925 as Blacksod Bay is the nearest point in Ireland to the continental shelf edge and the abysmal plain. Around 800 whales where harpooned and brought here and its main site on the nearby Island of Rusheen for processing.

Enjoy the weekend.

ps another phone photo, as my many DSLR photos did not capture all this at quite the same p.o.v.

HFF, Herb. Ich stelle mir gerade vor, wie dort die Walfänger schwer arbeiteten und es stark nach Tran roch. Gut, daß der Walfang in den meisten Ländern verboten ist und so das Ausrotten der Säuger gestoppt wurde.

Thank you Lothar. Yes the British Isles was dotted with such stations years ago and we have a lot of whale blood on our hands for sure. Our Yorkshire resort of Whitby even has two whale bones in an arch overlooking the town. Good that we and the Irish have at least stopped all that. As you say, the smell must have been pretty powerful here but it would have kept all the local population in work, food and warmth.

A beautiful busy harbour photo, I'm glad whaling was stopped but I realize that in former times poor communities needed it to survive.

HFF, Herb. An intriguing picture, full of detail. Your remarks about the whaling are interesting, too. Our last whaling station (in Albany, WA) didn't close until the 1970s and the sharks still congregate around the old fletching area where they were once attracted by the blood and offcuts. Our history is a bloody one, as is our present at times.

Keep yourself safe and well.

Wherever you have working fishing boats there is normally something interesting to take photos of.............and this fantastically well detailed image has proved that. I especially like the ropes in the foreground!

An interesting narrative and link too...............the last paragraph of the article in the link is very true and ever-so-slightly scary. We are sometimes our own worst enemy :-(

Enjoy the rest of your day...........and have a lovely weekend.

Interesting that in those days the whaling company was referred to as a fishery. I've heard it said that people felt guilty about killing mammals, but weren't that bothered about killing fishes. Making it seem that whales were fishes eased their guilt..!!

Herb Riddle club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thanks for your visit with you wonderful narrative Keith. A lot to think about when we see evidence of whaling here. The article, as you have found out is quite revealing. Yes, fishing was OK but not killing sea-mammals. Such is life, turning blind eyes. Very glad you liked it.

Best Wishes. Herb

Its interesting to see another Whaling shot not a past to be proud of but you have to admit kept the population busy and working, I dont know of very many uncluttered harbours with all the things of life on the sea there. HFF you have a good weekend.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Steve Paxton club
Ah you are quite right about all habours being cluttered really. I am reminded by 'Old Owl' above that your country (in Albany) was still whaling in the 70s. Such was those times and in many ways, some of our worst traits are returning as can be seen in Ukraine.
