Whitby and the River Esk

Whitby and the River Esk
Whitby, a seaside, fishing town on the North Yorkshire coast. Made famous by its hilltop Abbey and the towns connections to Bram Stoker's Dracula. However the fact that Captain Cook once lived here is perhaps of more importance. This monochromatic view helps to remind us of another of its famous inhabitants, the photographer: Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. www.sutcliffe-gallery.co.uk/gallery.html

Full size screen essential

Hi Herb as I said on 500px looks like a old photo from times gone by apart from the two cars perfect for Whitby.
All the best TOZ

Ps lots of detale in this Image Herb.

Good to see you having another look at this photo Toz. This has the added border and a signature too. Yes, a great temptation to erase the cars - I would have had to replace them with horse-drawn carriages and carts perhaps :) Whitby is just so perfectly preserved for such photos. A few more to come on here this yet.

Cheers, Herb

Good notes Herb. One is true and one is fiction, so I know which I prefer to read about, and seeing the Sutcliffe gallery, which I loved, I understand your presentation of this shot. I was going to say it looked like an old postcard. Cheers, Rosa.

Hi Rosa, you are right of course. I am still in the middle of reading that Bran Stokes original book but it is hard going -especially when in the Whitby settings. I just loved the Sutcliffe gallery and indeed have two of the books of his old photographs, of which, as you agree this is in a similar vein but I don't pretend to have his talents. More to come from here.

A beautiful capture Herb...............and your presentation is eerily similar to the way Sutcliffe presented his.............and I mean that as a compliment. The processing is perfect for the scene.

Thanks for the link to Sutcliffe's galleries too.................I have to admit I'd never heard of him until today. I've bookmarked the link to have a better look later on

I take that as a real compliment Keith. I have been to Whitby on a number of occasions and always took a lot of photos. Sutcliffe has been one of my photo idols so am very happy that I have passed his name onto you too.

Take care. Herb

This really looks great in sepia, Herb. I'm another who had not heard of Sutcliffe, but you've certainly achieved a great match to his style.

Thanks George. His photos are really inspirational, especially when you see them as I see them in my glossy quality books of his photos -each page being slightly bigger than A4. So glad you liked this.

A nicely composed shot of this classic view of the harbour and swing bridge Herb. I like the treatment, suits the scene beautifully. I am a great fan of Frank Sutcliff's photography and have a couple of his on my 'office' wall.

Take care and have a great Christmas, Doug

Herb Riddle club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Great that you too are familiar with Frank Sutcliffe's work Doug. I did wonder about buying a re-print of his but went for a couple of glossy books of his photos instead and what a treasure to browse now and again. When Ipernity allows, I have yet more shots of Whitby to upload. Hope you have managed to get out in this nasty weather for a shot or two.
