Badger fun and chaos

I have related to one or two of my friends and relatives the story of our garden badgers. This was taken just over a year ago in our back garden. I had decided to get a wild-life camera that was triggered by a movement sensor with an infra-red light after our garden was being continually wrecked during the evenings. One year on and our lawns still gets pulled apart every few days. The idea of the camera was to see what was doing the damage. They never come during the day and we do not feed them, although tempted, as you can imagine. I think this trio was a mother and two cubs. At first we thought them very cute but after wrecking two of our lovely lawns we now view these slightly differently. We think they have a sett somewhere near our railway linear park walk but they can range miles for food. I imagine that they pull away the top layer of soil and grass to get at worms and grubs. - This camera does capture in colour but during the night with this light it defaults to monochrome. Sorry no sound.

Enjoy full screen.

A fabulous video of the badgers Herb. Unfortunately they can be very destructive, but they do look cute at play. Very nicely captured. Cheers, Rosa.

Delighted that you liked this Rosa. I have a little update, below. I had never intended this video for public consumption (that's not my scene) but I am happy that my friends on here all like it.

Keep good. Herb

I suppose the never ending debate, A lawn to you, a patch of grass to the Badger, depends which side of the fence you are on Herb. Me ! I'll sit on the fence for now.
From the photography point of view a very entertaining few seconds of film, also rewarding for you diligence.

Hi Maurice. We were over the moon when we fist realised we had badgers on our property but three or four years in we think a bit differently. We have quite a wild corner area of this same garden -it would be fine if they stayed there, but no, our lawn is the greatest attraction. Eileen is just glad that they don't attack our many flower-beds for the many bulbs. We are feared if we covered the lawn with netting that they might just do that. (see my latest update below.)

Cheers Herb and glad you enjoyed this new to me feature.

What a lovely sight. Though I might think differently if my lawn was demolished at regular intervals.

A great capture they can do a lot of damage I think some of the ultra sonic deterrents are supposed to work on Badgers, if there is cattle market near you they may sell something to deter them, many years ago I used Bone Oil to stop foxes it was a pain to use

Hi Peter. Great that you enjoyed this. A few weeks after our lawns started to be ripped up we tried an ultra-sonic cat repellent on here. They just kept knocking it over and digging deeper :) Not sure what I would do with 'Bone Oil' !

Keep safe, Herb

I love the video Herb............it's fascinating to watch and pretty good quality. I feel sorry for the damage these badgers are doing to your garden though, it must be heartbreaking after all the work you put in.

Its difficult to blame the animal though - they're just doing what comes naturally - not that that is much help to you.

Hi Keith, I am with you with all that. Try as I want -to hate them, I cannot help but smile when watching this. How anybody can purposely slay them is a mystery to me. As you say, they are just being natural, after all it is really us humans invading their habitat.

See below for photo update.

The worst is the damage ... how to balance this problem, Herb?!
Lovely vídeo
In the end they seem to realize that they are being watched..
Your note is also very interesting

My pleasure to share our garden antics with you Judite. Is it a nice lawn where we see our birds hopping along or a badger dining-area. Maybe both?

Update: After suffering a tiny amount of what our lawn suffers, our next door neighbour yesterday decided to do something about it. They bought some lawn steel netting and covered most of their higher lawn with it, leaving a gap at the bottom side. This gap area looked perfect until this morning! The badger(s) had obviously thought - "what's this stuff, trying to stop me digging, I shall show them!" The neighbours will not be pleased on seeing this today! - Its, funny really!

Fantastic Herb you lucky man!!! I've seen a few in my time in Northern Ireland and I managed to catch a badger on my trailcam in the local woods here, but as yet its never reappeared. But as the grass gets shorter and nights darker i'll be putting it back out to see what it gets. Hopefully I'll catch it again.

Nice to see you with this Richard. We think one comes in the garden every two or three days. The garden is all dug up now and if I full all the holes in again I can guarantee that it will look just as bad in a few days. Very nice to see them on a camera like this and I have seen it live once in the night too, running up our drive. Glad you enjoyed it.

Interesting video, I have relatives who have had exactly the same destruction of their lawn and have also captured badgers on a wildlife night camera. Thanks for sharing, it is lovely see them even though it must be frustrating watching them dig up your lawn.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Ed Synchro club
Thanks for this Ed. It seems a few people have the same visitors to their gardens as Richard above says. I had wondered about trying to leave my camera at the ready on a tripod with flash ready for me to click but I was worried that they might panic and knock the tripod and camera over. Glad you liked this anyway.
