Fisherman's corner

Fisherman's corner
Taken in the small fishing port of Gourdon in Aberdeenshire in Scotland. Still a working harbour since 1820 but now a shadow of its former glory days.

In the 1881 season over 8,000 barrels of herrings were exported from Gourdon. The herring declined in the early 1900s and by 1912 fishermen from Gourdon had switched to long line fishing from motor boats, some of the first in Scotland to do so.

Long line fishing entailed laying a series of lines about 1,000m long across the sea bed, one for each man on the boat. Attached to each line were around 800 hooks, baited with mussels by the women of the village. Getting the mussels and baiting the hooks could take up to 9 hours per day and each fisherman had two lines, one being used, the other being baited for the following day.

A must, full screen.

Thanks Danni. The days of the big successful fishing industry here is very well gone but as can be seen with the new boat here, locals still do some shell fish and lobster fishing with the pots, as can be seen against the far wall.

Good picture.
Thank you for the note Herb.
Against the wall I can see a lot of pot traps.
As they do here, it all started for crustaceans and now they catch everything and anything with them. What a pity.

Good to see you again Jose. Yes, as said to Daniela above the days of the big successful fishing industry here is very well gone but as can be seen with the new boat here, locals still do some shell fish and lobster fishing with the pots, as can be seen against the far wall. As you say, much too many things are caught in those and now everybody knows the long term effect as our sea's are nearly empty.

Keep well, Herbert

Ah, the good old days. Will they ever come back, in some form or another I hope that yes, this kind of "Good old days" will return.

Eva, last night I saw a new TV mini-series about an attempt for four families to live on a very small Island just away from Wales. They had to do that, as in the days of 1900. They have to fish, farm and live without any modern help at all, wearing just 1900 type of clothing etc. Within just one week they were nearly starving, as they could not get out in a boat to fish during Winter storms. Their meager rations soon dwindled and their children were begging to go back to their real modern lives. Those good old days were certainly not the idealistic days of our imagination but I bow to your wider world experience than mine. That being said, I think, like you, that many things were certainly better in those times without mobile phones, TV, cars etc. Ah well!

Best Wishes, Herbert

I really think it would be very difficult to go back to the "good old days! If I am one hour without running water (and it happens sometimes in my building... when they clean the tank, for example) or when I am without electricity...imagine no computer! I am lost. Spinning my clothes? Weaving them? Etc. etc.

A great image Herb, the old neglected one is far more photogenic than the maintained one

This was in fact just a couple of hundred metres away from the big old harbour. Once thriving and teaming with people, now with just a few tourist . Thanks for the call.

What a lovely little corner of the world Herb.................very picturesque!

Viewed large, the detail in this shot is wonderful. I especially like the contrast between the two boats - one clean, well kept and nicely painted and the other in a serious state of disrepair! I especially like the peeling paint!

Excellent!

Keith, what would I do without your gems of comments here? As i saw this, whilst on a 4 mile walk from Inverbervie to Johnshaven, I loved it. Like you, I saw the contrast between old and new instantly but I also liked the symmetry of the old buildings behind. I wanted to find a p.o.v that led our eye to the buildings and you see here the result. Fortunately for me, the tree main elements here also tell the story of this little fishing corner too. Once again, I thank you for your time and effort with my pictures here. ~ Herb

Good description there Herb'... ..life must have been one continuous circle of repetitive graft...same thing day after day.. just to make a bare living probably, and even more cut off from anywhere back then.

Nice to see you again Dave. Aye, would not want to go back and live in those days. The lives of people in these little seaside villages must have been hard indeed but I don't think things were much better in our mill-towns either. Good that this has caught your attention.
