Bellowing red deer at Rutting time.

Bellowing red deer at Rutting time.
Red Deer Rut at Tatton Park, Cheshire

The sound of a red deer stag bellowing is both unmistakeable and unforgettable. At this time of year stags are battling to show their dominance to gather together a harem of females.

As always, beautiful at full screen. See pip

This is fantastic, Herb, I did never see a deer in my life, not this kind.

Oh you are missing a part of earths beauty Danny. To see the deer and their young too is simply marvellous. I am lucky that this big country mansion and its parkland is open for us to see these deer (at a price). This stag was chasing a female and as the female got away he was roaring with frustration I think (typical of us males :) ) I hope you managed to see the pip.

Good that you see it this way Colin. I did wonder about making this the pip to the adjacent photo. He was a fine fellow indeed.

They sure are antlers to be proud of! He looks like the top stag Herb!
A fabulous picture. We have a park with fallow deer near here. I love to see their antics this time of year.....Rosa.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Hi Ros. Without doubt he was the top stag, as a few younger ones came around towards the hinds, he soon chased them away. I have not been here for a year or two. The weather was poor but these deer still made the entrance price to the park worthwhile. There were fallow deer around here too. Good that you can share the same experiences as me.

Two splendid images of this magnificent stag..!! As the dominant male, he'll have had a hard time fighting for his harem lately and yet he still looks fighting fit..!!

I was hoping to get to Richmond or Bushy Park in London this month for the rut, but I've run out of time this month! I'm off to Exmouth next week to visit some of my family. I may have look when I come back, but the rut will almost be over by then. I'm glad I've seen these though. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks a lot my friend for another visit and comment here. He was threatened a few times by smaller stags but he soon saw them off. We did not know it was the Rut time but there were notices planted to be aware of these stags because of it once we got there. Hope you still manage to catch yours.

He looks magnificent...and terrifying! What a huge dominant male! I was at Tatton Park four weeks ago with my cousin...and all the deer were eerily invisible. Not a one. Must have known an Aussie was coming, and artfully concealed themselves.
Fabulous photos...he looks a different beast in the PiP
5 years ago.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Diana Australis club
Hi Diana, really good that to looked at both portraits here, as you say, quite a different beast when calm. We saw at least four different groups of dear on our extensive walks around the lakes here, at least one herb being of fallow deer. I would have asked for my money back if I would have been you! Great pity that oyu missed them but at least here you can see what you missed.

Best Wishes from my home, only a 45min ride from here, Herb

Excellent shot Herb, the PiP is excellent also, were you far from him as he has you in his eye, for sure!!

Herb Riddle club has replied to natureoncam aka Greg club
Hi Greg, delighted that you enjoyed this.. I was about 50-80ft from him behind a big tree, only a few yards from the road through the park. It had been chasing a female but it got away and its roar seem to be in frustration rather than at me. But - I did think for a moment that it had seen me and might have charged as I stuck mightily close to that tree. Taken here with my 220 long lens equivalent to full frame 330mm.

Wonderful Stag beautifully captured both in the main image and the pip Herb ,
The noise generated when stags fight is something that's never to be forgotten and
the size of the wild red dear on the Quantocks comes as a surprise to many,
must say the female look really unimpressed.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Roger (Grisly) club
Nature can be so great Roger as you know. Without doubt I would not have wanted to stray upon him up close by accident whilst he was in that rutting mood. I know there are red deer on the Quantocks but I have not seen them on our brief visits. As you say the doe here did not see to want to know. There were other stags but they kept well away.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Nick Weall club
Hi Nick, there were indeed signs telling visitors to be very wary of these rutting stags. We had a park walk which would have led us directly through the middle of his herd, as you can imagine, we gave that a miss!

Powerful shot. I was going to say something snarky about machismo, but that's anthropomorphizing. He's really just following his own nature.
Though it must be said that the females do not look impressed. ;-)
Herb Riddle club has replied to Sarah P. club
Ha ha, you could get into trouble with such thoughts Sarah! Indeed, the pull of nature in these animals is very powerful (a bit like with us humans perhaps) , and as with us too, the females just take it all in their stride -ignoring all that wallowing. The one that this stag fancied, soon made off.
