Lowry Days

Lowry Days
A blast from the past. This old slide taken some forty odd years ago reminds us of the latest past Winter and the old joys of enjoying the snow. This hill has now changed somewhat with new apartments etc covering the top edge and certainly no access to the public any more. The title and photo is reminiscent to the style of our famous Salford artist L.S Lowry. Enjoy.

David Slater (Spoddendale), , Peter_Private_Box, Elaine and 7 other people have particularly liked this photo

This is a terrific picture Herb and definitely recognisable as Lowry style. Thank you for finding it and posting it! A big gold star from me!
All the best, Rosa.

Dear Rosa, its great that you managed to pop over and see this one which was posted after seeing your comment on my Salford Quays shot. Looking at it again now, it is amazing, like Lowry's own painting and drawings, how this has retained it sense of ageless appeal.
Glad you enjoyed this and a big thank you for the star.
Best Wishes, Herb

You are right Steve - this shot almost lost in time so many times has popped up again and hopefully given some folk a bit of joy. The original appeared in Panoramio and later Flickr, as you know!

Fab shot this one Herb, you nailedit totally and it is indeed very reminiscent of a Lowry-even down to the odd bright coloured figures. Excellent

Thanks Richard. As Steve, above says -you can't hold a gud-un down. I always was proud of this picture which had some success in my old days of camera-clubbing. As living near the very subjects of Lowry this scene always draws me to him. Great that you like it so.

No access to people anymore. That's not good.

That's how it is Danni, with so much of our open spaces. In truth, this land was always in private hands and I suspect the crowds of people and their sledges on here were too much for the farmer to handle any more and so the year after, big fences and walls erected..... Hmmm

Yes, very Lowry!
I can't help noticing the colourful winter clothing! I had forgotten (until I dug out some of my old climbing photos of the 70s), just what an array of reds yellows, and blues we all wore! I look at winter clothing now and it is much more subdued, in the main!
Terrific shot, again!

Aye Andy, I had the opportunity of getting my old ski anorak from the attic for the very cold blizzard walk and felt its age not least because of the bright red bulk of the colour of that. It still retained its good heat characteristics though. I even looked in a shop the other day at Winter coats and as you say, most were very drab indeed compared to what we see in this picture. Glad you still like this one, Herb

A timeless image Herb............it could have been taken at any time in the last 50 years! The title is spot on for the style of shot too.

Excellent quality for such an old slide photo.

Thanks Keith. This has done-the-rounds now but it still has a timeless appeal to it, I see. Thanks for enjoying this with me, Herb.
ps this digital conversion has gradually improved as my software has got better. I think the white certainly helps. The slide was between glass for some years before I scanned it. Of course, I still have the original slide too.

Hi Herb,

It does look very 'Lowry', with so many people (no dogs that I can see), and a nice reminder for us that winter used to be like this. What do we get these days... elf n safety stops it, and kid sit at home (or McDonalds) playing on iphones!
Gets a big star from me!

Best wishes, and Happy Easter!

We are of the same mind Peter. I know from my grandchildren that phones and palm-tops rule the day as far as activities are concerned. I was excited over such things when they first came out many years ago now, but I've since changed my tune. In there defence, I did in fact see some sledge tracks on our local hills -no doubt very young children accompanied by their parents, for as you say the dreaded H&S officer might be around the corner :)

Very happy you like this blast from the past. Happy Easter Monday, Herb
