Behind the Rocky out crop : No moon in sight

Behind the Rocky out crop : No moon in sight
This shot was taken well before the moon came up you will note how dark the sky is compared to the others with the moon.

Gudrun you got that 100% right it was dark on the far side but worth the walk i believe. while i have been here several time i have never been down the back and never see the full extent of the rock dome, here it stands out. the tree at the top has been in a lot of my photos

Nikon D600 full frame, Samyang 14mm F2.8 @2.8, ISO 3200 , WB 4000, taken as verticals on a calibrated tripod head movement 30 degrees. nothing fancy all text book stuff just follow the rules and they work as you can see I am still learning as I go. only my second try at the Bow but results are stunning. you will be able if you can get a clear cold night no moon and as far from city light as you can this is only 30min out of the city (right hand side of the photos). part of the reason to be where I am here the hill hides all the city lights. you can do it if you put your mind to it and follow the simple rules but first you have to know are you a full frame or a crop as they both have very different times. hope this helps you and makes you want to try. any more info you know just where to find me. Good to hear about the WB! For northern lights I use about the same, 4000 Kelvin or WB for fluorescent light which comes to 3800-4000 K.

Gudrun i have done quite a bit of looking at what I want and what white balance gives me the result as an easy edit I came back to 4000K add a bit of blue you have a dark inky sky. its a preference thing I think its had to put a colour on the night sky even as a colour matcher as it changes quite a bit but this is about the best as a representation of the night sky colour.
