Sherborne, Dorset.

Sherborne, Dorset.
Possibly my favourite building in Sherborne. I have been admiring it for the past 50 years :)

The Green, Sherborne.

Until recently this was a Bank, but as in so many small towns, it is now closed down.

Andy Rodker, Frans Schols, Gudrun, and 28 other people have particularly liked this photo

Marvellous images of these well preserved ancient buildings Rosa. Quite unlike anything here.

Thank you George. They take great care of the buildings. There is one in the main street that doesn't fit in, probably from the 1970's!

In Holland we call these houses 'Vakwerk huizen' Rosa... They are beauties in your pictures...

I remember seeing some in NL Christien. A pity they don't have so much character in todays buildings.
Thank you for your kind comments.

Another fascinating series of photos Rosa.............I've had to add Sherborne to my list of places to visit as a result of looking at your photos, although it'll have to wait until next year :-)

It's easy to see why you chose that beautiful building as your main image.............it looks stunning in the sunshine! The creamy colours of the plaster match the weathered old timbers perfectly.

The other half timbered houses in the PiPs are really charming, especially the old bank building which, I suspect, will end up making someone a lovely house.

Wonderful photography!

You won't regret visiting Keith, with their two castles, one a ruin and one complete, and the Abbey, as well as the lovely town itself. You may well be right about the bank building, but one in Wincanton's High Street has just become a hairdressers.

Thank you so much for your very nice comments and compliment.

A wonderful building it's good to see the window displays are traditional, I'm not sure about the colour but it must be correct it has to be a Grade 1 listed building

What is so wonderful with lime plaster is that it changes colour with the weather to a certain degree. Also it depends on the colour setting on computers in many instances. I remember seeing some pic's on a friends computer and their colour setting was much too vivid.
Hope you have a good weekend Peter.

Hi Peter,

Sherborne is well worth a return visit. There are two other Sherborne's and one with a U in the spelling, so make sure you go to the right one ;-))

Thank you for all your kind comments.

I do too Joe. I am going to Shrewsbury and the surrounding area again in December, so there will be many great opportunities to see and take pictures of the abundance of half-timbered buildings there. Cheers, Rosa.

I had a walk around Shrewsbury on the way to Attingham Park on Saturday I felt they don't pay enough attention to details things like like modern signs that shouldn't be there, wheelie bins infront of B&W houses
and they need to ban cars on narrow back streets if they want to be a tourist destination

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
I am hoping to visit Attingham Park again when we visit Shrewsbury, but will see what my daughter has planned. I agree that in the town there are a few blots on the landscape, but I love it there so much and the B&B we stay in is also full of history...and they have parking, which is rare when you are close to the town.

The mixture of warm coloured stone and timber is so lovely, the houses may be from different eras but they are in harmony. You caught them very well.

such great old buildings. so many stories they have held. and i so love the yellow one!!

i was lucky enough on my last trip to England to get to stay in a house from the 1600s - and also go into a building in the town built in the style of your buildings here. upstairs it had exposed rafters that had a gadget sitting on it to check for extra leanage so in case it tilted more people could safely leave the building!

Thank you for your interesting comments. My daughter lives in a small cottage that was built in 1600's. We are renovating it at the moment....she is also living in it while the work is gradually being done. She loves it. Where did you stay on your last visit?
